Hi All,

I'm looking for information on Flamboyant, (Delonix Regia). If you know ANYTHING about these trees as bonsai please post it.
Also if you have pictures of them as bonsai, that would be a big help also.

Even pictures of trees under development would be a help at this stage.

hello.This is not an easy tree to work with.
To get it to flower [when mature enough] you
must dry it out to the point of death.

To work on it you need a height of 3' and a
large container[1/3 of one of those black 55
gal.barrels].Be prepared to thread graft.
Use small seedlings in little pots to work as
the thread grafts.

This technique will give you branches.

Apart from that the tree is easily grown.

I figure that from the size of the compound leaf it will have to be a large bonsai. Flamboyant grows wild here and there are any number of trees with trunks 2 to 3 inches thick that can be collected.

Several people have told me that this species gives trouble with branching, and others have said that they have gotten it to work. I figure that it is worth a shot.

It is hard to grow flamboyan as a bonsai. Many branches will die and remain one or two only. It could if you put it in a big container as suggested before. I saw one flmboyan bonsai in my hawaii trip during the BCI convention in 1990.

good to see you here.As I get some free time I hope to
fulfill Leslie's request for images of local tree attempts
as Bonsai,no matter how gruesome my efforts might
be.

I hope you can spend some time here to help build
this truly Tropical Forum into a living entity.

As to the Flamboyant,the continuous experience over
here is easily grown large trunks,but few branches.
When applying the thread grafts for branches,much
fertiliser must be used for any continued success.

It also helps if one lives in a humid zone.Where I
live the lower humidity [ side of hill in a wind channel]
works against these branching attempts.

Also tried was lots of sharp inorganic soil ingredients,
crushed sifted silica gravel,crushed sifted red brick
and freely draining soil for increased watering.
Roy S.saw results but when he returned to England
and very sadly died,the Flamboyant was left to someone
not able to give the intensive care it needed.

This has also repeated itself with the Samaan [ Samanea
Saman].Roy was able to get excellent results but with
intensive care.A great deal of attention is needed.
