soaking seeds before planting them

is it true that the ones that float are unlikely to germinate ?

Until recently my answer was yes. Seeds that float after soaking a few hours are not viable.But like all things there are exceptions.
I have since germinated seed of Pemphus acidula that floated for at least 2 days and magically they did germinate.
So, I guess it depends.

Gadiel,
about 3 weeks for the Pemphis to sprout. They now have the start of a first true leaf but are quite tiny.
Most of the seed damped off from fungus with only 5 sprouts alive at this point.

As Jerry says there are exceptions. One obvious one is the coconut tree. Their coconuts/seeds spend forever in the sea and spring to life when washed up on the beach. This may be a special adaptation for plants that live near water, I think that Pemphis live near to the sea as well.

Jerry,
Keep the new sprout in semi shade but with a lot of wind. Direct sun will make them dry, less wind will make the fungus comes. The drainage must be perfect.
