How do I get started?

I have had a few bonsai trees over the years, but they have all been bought fully developed.
Now I would like to create a bonsai from a small serissa plant which I have bought. I have acouple of questions however:
When should I start the process? Should I wait until the plant is the height I want the bonsai, and then it will thicken out, or should I start straight away, and then it will grow in proportion?

Just to clarify, I need to cut the roots down by almost a third, and prune off any branches which I do not want?

Any help would be most appreciated
Guy

Hi well my recomendation would just be to wait a while before doing any work on a tree that you just got, let it be adjust to your life stile, light, waterr and other environmental signals before you start doing any proning or rooth cutting. After six months or a year you can start, and donīt think you are loosing time while just waiting, if you move to quickly it will kill your tree. This is particularly true for serrisa, other species are more forgiving. Ciao Enrique
